SAN ANTONIO -- A Texas foundation is trying to make life a little easier for those undergoing cancer treatment.
Cleaning for a Reason started in Lewisville, Texas, which is just north of Dallas, back in 2006. It's the only national non-profit providing free, professional housecleaning services for cancer patients by partnering up with cleaning services around the country.
"I had breast cancer 5 years ago and was cured of that. Then last February, right before Valentine's Day, I was diagnosed with leukemia," explained Sandy Shied.
Sandy went in and out of the hospital after being diagnosed with leukemia just last year, and her duties as a house wife only added stress to an already stressful situation.
"Besides the mental part of it, that something really bad has happened, getting leukemia, now here's something really good," Sandy said.
That "good" being that the Cleaning for a Reason foundation would bring a cleaning specialist into her home. Sandy found out about Cleaning for a Reason through a church bulletin brought to her by a friend. But she was stuck in a hospital bed and couldn't reach out to them.
"My daughter-in-law, Barbara, went on the computer and investigated it for me," Sandy explained.
During the time Sandy went through chemotherapy a month later, someone from "White Glove Maid Service" came knocking at her door. They are one of five cleaning agencies in San Antonio partnering with Cleaning for a Reason.
Pamela is a breast cancer survivor herself. She works at White Glove Maid Service and has been cleaning cancer patients' homes for years.
"I understand how they feel," said Pamela. "And last thing they want to worry about is cleaning their house."
The program brought these two strong cancer survivors together.
"I got to know her more than anyone cause she was a breast cancer survivor," said Sandy.
"If we can go in and help them with that it makes it worth everything," Pamela told us.
"It's a wonderful program," added Sandy. "The word is spreading we need to spread it more."
The Cleaning for a Reason is currently raising money to help more women around the country. If you would like to know more about hoe the the program works or want to get involved, CLICK HERE.
