Advances in cancer care, treatment, prevention, and survivorship continue to emerge from the 2012 ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago. Today is National Cancer Survivors Day! Cancer.Net recently collaborated with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to launch Moving Forward: Perspectives from Survivors and Doctors, a series of 13 videos focused on issues facing young adults diagnosed with cancer. Topics covered include managing bills and expenses, dealing with the fear of recurrence, navigating the dating world, and understanding body changes, sexuality, and fertility. Right now, more than 30,000 cancer specialists from around the world are in Chicago discussing the latest advances in cancer care. 2012 ASCO Humanitarian Award Recipient Announced
Edith Peterson Mitchell, MD, FACP, today received the ASCO Humanitarian Award. The ASCO Humanitarian Award recognizes an ASCO member who distinguishes himself/herself through voluntary and non-compensated humanitarian endeavors. Dr. Mitchell has participated in flood relief, supportive patient advocacy, and organized vaccination clinics. She is a clinical professor in the departments of Medicine and Medical Oncology as well as program leader of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, associate director for Diversity Programs for the Kimmel Cancer Center (KCC) at Jefferson, and director of the KCC Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities. In addition to her professional roles, she has spent many years in service with the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard.
