The HOTY Report
Hello to all BrooksideBuzzers and Ships at Sea.
Reporting live from Jackson Hole, Wy. As in Oming.
The question I am asked most often other than “Why are you such a fantastic golfer?” is:
“How is the patient?”
Today we took the tram to the top of the mountain, 10,400 feet to the summit.
We consumed a fantastic waffle and she decided to run down, you heard me, RUN.
The ranger at the top of the mountain said: “It’s 7.4 miles down and will take 3 hours.”
I took the tram down, Sunday NYTimes in tow and settled at the bottom with coffee and the paper for a happy morning.
One hour and 15 minutes later there she was, no kidding, red faced but in one piece. She ran the whole way down.
I hardly had time to finish the business section.
Wait….. there is more.
Barely an hour rest and we went off on an 8 mile hike. Her idea not mine.
It’s Sunday and my job is to read the paper and decide where to go for lunch.
No way, 8 miles.
So to answer your questions, she is strong, determined, smiling and determined to ruin my Sunday’s.
I love it!
Over and out.

Resolution
A friend sent this poem to me (Silver Lining). It resonated with me immediately. I hope that it does the same with you!
The Resolution
I imagine myself as a Window
The frame sure and solid from fine, aged oak
The glass bright and gleaming, barely smudged.
Then an angry rock hurled unexpectedly
Shattered the shiny glass
Scattering bits of silver in every direction.
The frame still in tact, still standing
But empty without its glass.
No substance, no function, no purpose.
The rain and the wind blow wild
Sending a raw chill through the gabping frame
That’s still to fragile from the blow
To even dream of being whole once more.
Days go along slow and meaningless
Until one day, the frame longs to be a Window.
So many pieces to put back together
Such an exhausting task, and I am so weary.
Maybe just one piece.
One piece a day.
One piece a day.
Some of the pieces do not fit together anymore.
Some are lost forever.
Some are jagged and draw blood at the touch.
Some new unfamiliar pieces are found.
Still, a small pebble tossed carelessly
Can reshatter the glass at a any time.
But somehow the glue does seem to make the
Glass stronger, not so breakable.
Today, I viewed my Window from a distance.
The cracks were barely visible
And a new gleam was proudly bouncing
Off the mended glass.
Up close, I saw something new.
My Window was now a Mirror,
Its new purpose to reflect a warm glow
To those who pass by in need of comfort.

Friday’s Fixin’s: Fiddle Egg Salad
Last year, I had the great and wonderful opportunity to get to know Maili Halme Brocke. She is an outrageously talented chef who is as nice as nice can be. Talent, smarts and kindness make for a real Silver Lining friend.
We bonded over our mutual desire to eat healthy, delicious food AND lose some lbs (especially after my “Fat and Happy Summer”).
Little did I know what was in store for me: The Chemo Diet. I highly recommend and prefer Maili’s approach.
Maili “fiddled” around with her already delicious food to make them more geared toward weight loss, but still delicious…hence The Fiddle Diet. Isn’t that clever? I just love it!
The Fiddle Circle of Food Happiness is about losing weight while eating the real food you love: “If it’s food, it’s on the diet!”
FIDDLE VERSION OF EGG SALAD
Ingredients
- 6 Hard Boiled Eggs
- 6 Hard Boiled Egg Whites only
- 1/4 cup reduced fat mayonnaise (I happen to use the reduced fat veganaise)
- 2 teaspoons French’s mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- freshly ground pepper to taste, optional
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
Instructions:
- Place 12 whole eggs in a saucepan and cover them with at least an inch of water.
- Place heat on high until water is boiling. As soon as water boils, turn the heat off and set a timer for 10 minutes.
- Let eggs sit in the water for 10 minutes.
- Then run under cold water until cool enough to peel (many people make the mistake of overcooking their eggs and then the outside of the yolks turns gray. This method with ensure you don’t overcook the eggs and then they will have the best flavor!)
- Peel eggs and discard 6 of the yolks.
- Place the eggs, low-fat mayonnaise, mustard and salt in a bowl.
- Mash with a potato masher until everything is well combined and eggs are cut-up into small pieces. Stir with a spoon if you need to combine it more.
Nutritional Information:
- Each 1/3 cup serving has 65 calories.
- It has 6.3 grams of protein per serving and 4.1 grams of fat.
Maili recommends the Fiddle Egg Salad on an open-faced sandwich of high fiber bread or corn rye. You can also serve it on celery sticks or cucumber rounds. She has also seen it served in nasturtium flowers as an hors d’eovures at an afternoon tea.
Hope you enjoy this Silver Lining recipe!
