Diligence Pays Off When Fighting Cancer
Verna Ludwig of Woodbridge has always been diligent about eating well, exercising and taking care of herself. She continually did self-breast exam. She always scheduled her mammography screening annually. That’s why it came as such a surprise to her immediately after her annual screening when, Grace P Malantic-Lu MD., radiologist at the JFK Breast Center, suggested that she see a surgeon for follow-up.
“I always made it a priority to eat well, exercise and be diligent about annual health screenings,” explains Verna. “I think that you hope by being proactive that you might actually be exempt from ever getting cancer. In my case, it was the early detection that mattered.”
After further examination by Harold Chung-Loy M.D., surgeon on staff at JFK Medical Center, and further testing of MRI and a needle biopsy, both offered at The Breast Center at JFK, a recommendation followed that Verna should have a double mastectomy in order to ensure the best possible outcome.
Verna is doing great now and is an active participant in the Live Strong Exercise Program at the YMCA in Woodbridge where she shares support with other active cancer survivors. Verna is also an active participant of the “Survivors & Thrivers” support group sponsored by JFK Medical Center. It is an opportunity for her to stay connected to fellow survivors. The group celebrates survivorship, provides an opportunity for discussion around post-treatment concerns and helps with moving forward in life.
