It’s important for women to exercise after cancer treatment to recover their body strength drained out due to treatments and to retain their fitness. At the American College of Sports Medicine’s 15th annual Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition, health experts had recommended breast cancer survivors in the US to exercise.

Josie Gardiner and Joy Prouty along with founding Director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Carolyn Kaelin, had written the Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fitness Plan for cancer survivors.

Josie Gardiner is herself a cancer surviving patient. Josie Gardiner said that after chemotherapy, a cancer survivor patient can lose bone density at a rate of ten times faster than average women. Moreover, personal trainers and fitness professionals lack knowledge about various different cancer treatments; therefore, they are unable to treat or help their clients who are cancer survivors.

The Breast Cancer Survivor’s fitness plan outlines 8-10 full-body exercises that are specific to the cancer surgery and reconstruction and attends to the specific requirements of cancer survivor patients related to cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength and balance.

The American College of Sports Medicine, the largest sports medicine and exercise organization, has also recently published the “Roundtable on Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors” indicating the benefits of exercise for physical functionality and quality of life of cancer survivor patients.
