CRETE (2000 to 1500 BCE): Women were beginning to realize the value of garments and the look of beauty and its benefits. The beginning use of a Girdle was shown in illustrations
ANCIENT GREECE (1100 BCE to 50 BCE)
Bra: Breast band was being used and called apodesmos, mastodeton or strophion.
Wigs: Used to cover bald (shaved) heads and protect them from the sun. Used for fashion and beauty.
ROMAN EMPIRE (31 BCE TO 312 AD)
Bra: Wearing a tunic with a girdle and adopted a form of the apodesme called a strophium or mamillare. Roman women wore a tunic gathered slightly under the bust with no waist.
Wigs: Extremely popular for fashion and to hide baldness
Cosmetics: Wearing cosmetics was extremely popular - Powdered chalk to lighten faces, red wine based lipstick, ash-based eyeliner and perfume was very popular.
1900s to Today:
1930 Onward: Large-scale commercial production of bras began
1975: 1st Synthetic Breast Form created and patented by Cornelius and Jolly Rechenberg. Bags of rice, beads and other materials had been used previously. Jolly Rechenberg continues the family tradition with American Breast Care innovating new breast forms, shapers and mastectomy bras.
